Kids & Pups make a perfect picture
Kids & Pups make a perfect picture

Sometimes I am lucky enough to photograph families that I know and love.  I became friends with Chantal when she was pregnant with her 1st, Carter.  I’m pretty sure he was the first newborn I ever photographed…..crazy.  Since then we have had many sessions and a few additions to their family….most importantly Sofia, the little princess 😉  Next came a pair of rather large but cuddly dogs.    We all converged under the Lions Gate Bridge in West Vancouver to take their latest family photos; we had the perfect weather for pics, sunny and warmish.  The kids & puppies were ready to explore and that worked for me, I love catching candied, honest moments in peoples lives and the best way to get that with kids is too let them play.  Don’t get me wrong, I still make sure to get the family photo with everyone looking at the camera and smiling but that is not what its about for me.  I want to make a photograph that holds memories of a fun adventure, of laughter and love.  I want to capture those moments for families who come to get their portraits done.  I certainley will capture what you look like on that day, but more importantly I will capture who you and your family are. Sometimes a picture may not be technically perfect, but if the expression or moment is magic I will love it.  So back to West Van and photographing the Branson family; I hope when you look at the images below you feel the fun, love and adventure that we experienced that wonderful day.

It is always a good day when I get to photograph the Smith family.  The kids are super sweet (not to mention cute) and fun to take pictures of.  This week we had a special reason to have a session, wee little Lillian, the newest addition to the family.  At just 6 months old, she is the perfect age to photograph and capture all those cute smiles and chubby cheeks.  It certainly doesn’t hurt that she can sit up but not yet crawl…..no escaping. haha!   We met over the weekend at one of my favourites places to shoot in West Vancouver.  Tall grass, wild flowers, washed up logs & the ocean kinda make up the perfect spot for taking pictures……the sun shining was an extra bonus.  Evelyn & Austin (the older 2) were full of grins & giggles and bounced around letting me catch their true personalities while still capturing the family as a whole unit too.  Evelyn is the same age as my little girl so I can really get to her level and play like a 4 year old……well I can probably do that anytime but who is keeping track 😉  I am so grateful to be able to meet and photograph gorgeous fun families like the Smiths.

I shot this session with my Nikon D800 and the 70-200 2.8 lens…both are my go tos for session alike these…..I love the ease of use of the 800 and the versatility it gives me, especially when I am backlighting my portraits.  The 70-200 has such beautiful bokeh and compression…I wish I could use it for all my shoots.
